Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Slow cooker
  • Spatula/spoon

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 6 cups bread cubes from stale sourdough or French bread
  • 1 cup chicken broth low-sodium
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 stalks celery chopped
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Preparation

  • Prepare bread by cubing it and allowing it to air dry overnight, or lightly toast it in the oven until crisp.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add chopped celery and onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for one minute until fragrant.
  • Transfer the cooked vegetables to a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the prepared bread cubes to the bowl with the cooked vegetables.
  • Sprinkle in poultry seasoning, dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper, then toss gently to combine.
  • Slowly pour in 1 cup of chicken broth, tossing gently until the bread is moist but not saturated; add more broth a tablespoon at a time if needed.

Cooking

  • Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker.
  • Transfer the stuffing mixture into the prepared slow cooker and spread evenly.
  • Cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or LOW for 3-4 hours, until heated through and the edges are lightly browned.
  • For a crispier top, remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of cooking or briefly broil the stuffing in a baking dish.
  • Serve the stuffing warm.

Notes

Ensure bread is sufficiently dry for best texture. Adjust broth amount to achieve desired moisture without making the stuffing soggy. For a golden, crispy top, consider broiling briefly after cooking.
