Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Medium bowl
  • Pastry blender
  • Oven
  • Fork

Ingredients

For the Apples

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional)

For the Brown Sugar Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

Prepare the Apples

  • Peel, core, and slice apples. Combine them with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a large bowl, then transfer to a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the Brown Sugar Topping

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter until coarse crumbs form, then stir in milk until just combined.

Assemble the Cobbler

  • Evenly drop spoonfuls of the topping mixture over the prepared apples in the baking dish.

Bake

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and apples are tender.

Serve

  • Serve the cobbler warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For best results, ensure butter is very cold when making the topping. Do not overmix the topping to keep it tender. Adjust baking time based on your oven and desired apple tenderness.
